God has given us “exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be made partakers of the divine nature.” (II Pet. 1:4) Unfortunately many Christians live under a bit of a cloud of faint cynicism. Satan will whisper in their ears doubts about the truth that they are eternally saved. In our minds that are trained to pessimism, we begin to question if, although we know we love the Lord, perhaps one day we will miss heaven. The doctrine of eternal salvation is a precious doctrine to the believer. A biblical understanding of the truth will help one ward off the lies that Satan and our flesh may tell us.
In a departure from the normal format of the “In the Word” article, I am going to use several verses from John 6 for the next several weeks. John 6 is a precious passage in which Jesus delivers the discourse on the Bread of Life. Throughout the passage are verses that will comfort any one, reminding them of the certainty of everlasting life for the believer.
“And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:40
I. We can rest in God’s will.
Notice the clause “I will raise him up at the last day.” This is a guarantee from the mouth of the Lord Jesus. We all would like to be in that group which will be assuredly raised in the last day, but how do we know we are in that group? Let us look at the context.
Jesus says, “This is the will of him that sent me, that everyone which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life.” According to this verse, if through faith we have seen the Son and believe on Him, then it is God’s will for us to be raised up in the last day. God’s will cannot be circumvented nor can it be negated. If God wills something to come to pass, it will occur.
Have you seen Jesus through the eye of faith? Do you believe, that is, trust in Him? Then it is God’s will for you to be given life in the last day. Do not worry! It is God’s will. Regardless of how you feel, what you may think, or what you have done, let God be true and every man a liar. Can there be any greater comfort then the assurance that God has willed that something will come to pass? Then take heart. He will never leave you nor forsake you.
Be sure to return next week for part 2 of "And I Will Raise Him up in the Last Day." |
